Los Cristianos

A former fishing village on Tenerife's south coast with a working harbour, sheltered beaches and ferry links to the western Canary Islands.

Los Cristianos is one of the original tourist towns on Tenerife's south coast, a former fishing village that grew into a busy resort from the 1960s onwards. It has kept more of its Spanish character than its neighbours, with a working harbour and an old town at its heart. The beach is sheltered and calm, and the harbour is one of the most active ferry ports in the Canary Islands.

What [Destination] is known for

Los Cristianos is best known for its harbour and its beach. The harbour is both a working port and a major ferry terminal, connecting Tenerife with La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. Watching the ferries and fishing boats come and go from the harbour wall or the promenade is one of the pleasures of the town. The beach, Playa de Los Cristianos, is a sheltered golden crescent with calm water and good facilities, tucked between the harbour and the resort buildings. The promenade connects Los Cristianos to Playa de las Américas to the west, passing bars, restaurants and shops. The town has a slightly more relaxed and local feel than its neighbours, which makes it popular with families and older visitors. There is a Sunday market near the harbour, boat trips for whale and dolphin watching, and good access by bus to the rest of the island. From the harbour, it is also possible to take a day trip across to La Gomera in around one hour.

Things to do in [Destination]

If you want to feel the working side of the town, spend an hour on the harbour wall watching the inter-island ferries come and go. For whale watching, book a morning boat trip from the harbour, which operates year-round in one of Spain's most productive cetacean zones. If you enjoy day trips, take the ferry to La Gomera — about an hour across, with a very different feel. On Sundays, a market near the harbour is worth a browse.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

The ferry to La Gomera is a great day trip and sells out in peak season, so book ahead. The harbour area is the most characterful part of the town, best explored in the evening. Los Cristianos is slightly more relaxed than Playa de las Américas next door, which makes it a better base for families and those who want quieter nights. Whale and dolphin watching tours leave from the harbour and are year-round, as the local pilot whale population is resident. The promenade to Playa de las Américas is flat and easy, good for an evening walk.
