Garachico

Tenerife's most beautiful village on the north coast, rebuilt after a volcanic eruption in 1706, with a perfectly preserved historic centre and famous natural rock pools.

Garachico sits on the north coast of Tenerife, about 45 minutes west of Puerto de la Cruz. It was once the most important port in the Canary Islands, destroyed in 1706 when a volcanic eruption buried the harbour under lava. The town was rebuilt and its historic centre survives extraordinarily well. Listed among the most beautiful villages in Spain, it is the single most rewarding day trip from any base in northern Tenerife.

What [Destination] is known for

Garachico is best known for two things: its historic town centre and the El Caletón natural pools. El Caletón was created in 1706 when rivers of lava from the Trevejo volcano cooled as they reached the sea, forming a series of irregular pools in the hardened rock. The contrast between the dark volcanic stone and the clear Atlantic water is beautiful. The pools are free to enter and accessible year-round, with lifeguards in summer. The historic centre is compact and full of character. The Plaza de la Libertad is surrounded by the former Franciscan convent, the town hall and the stately Palace of the Counts of La Gomera. The 16th-century Castillo de San Miguel, a small fort built against pirate attacks, now houses the town's heritage centre. The Church of Santa Ana, rebuilt after the 1706 eruption, has a notable Mudejar ceiling and a climbable bell tower. Above the town, the Mirador del Emigrante gives sweeping views over the coast.

Things to do in [Destination]

Start at El Caletón for a swim in the natural pools, best in calm weather. Walk through the old town from the Castillo de San Miguel to Plaza de la Libertad, stopping at the church and the convent. Climb the bell tower of Santa Ana for the views. If you have time, drive to the Mirador del Emigrante above the town. Garachico is an easy day trip from Puerto de la Cruz, taking about 40 minutes by car and feasible by bus on the 363 line.

Food and drink in [Destination]

Garachico has a handful of good traditional restaurants on and near the seafront, some with views of the natural pools. The focus is on fresh fish and Canarian mountain cooking. It is not a big resort, so the options are limited but honest.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

El Caletón natural pools are best visited at low tide for swimming, and at high tide for the spectacle of waves crashing over the rocks. The historic centre is small enough to cover in two hours on foot. Garachico is best as a half-day or full-day trip from Puerto de la Cruz — it is too quiet for a multi-night stay for most visitors. Bus 363 from Puerto de la Cruz is cheap and practical. Combine with a visit to Icod de los Vinos nearby, famous for its ancient dragon tree.
