La Orotava

One of the most beautiful colonial towns in the Canary Islands, in the Orotava Valley above Puerto de la Cruz, famous for its carved wooden balconies and Corpus Christi flower carpets.

La Orotava sits in the Orotava Valley above Puerto de la Cruz, with wide views down to the coast and up to the slopes of Mount Teide. It is one of the oldest and most beautiful towns in the Canary Islands, built up during the 16th and 17th centuries when wealthy families settled here and filled the streets with grand mansions. Its historic centre is remarkably well preserved.

What [Destination] is known for

La Orotava is best known for its colonial architecture and its Corpus Christi celebrations. The town's streets are lined with aristocratic mansions from the 17th and 18th centuries, each with a distinctive carved wooden balcony and an interior courtyard. The most famous of these is the Casa de los Balcones on Calle San Francisco, built in 1632, with an extraordinary long balcony of carved Canarian pine across its top floor. The house is now a museum and craft centre where traditional embroidery is still made by hand. The Jardines Victoria are terraced formal gardens in the upper town with wide views, and the Church of La Concepción, with its dome visible from across the valley, anchors the historic centre. At the viewpoint of Mirador Humboldt, the view of the valley, the coast and the sea is one of the finest on Tenerife. Every June, La Orotava creates enormous sand and flower carpets on its streets for the feast of Corpus Christi, one of the most spectacular traditional festivals in the Canary Islands.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Come on a weekday morning when the historic centre is at its quietest. The Casa de los Balcones is the main sight — the courtyard is free to enter, with a small charge for the museum. The Mirador Humboldt gives the best panoramic view of the valley and coast. For the Corpus Christi flower carpets, usually in early June, book accommodation months ahead. Bus from Puerto de la Cruz takes about 20 minutes and is cheap and frequent.
