Valldemossa
Mountain, Rural
A stone mountain village in the Serra de Tramuntana, best known for its Carthusian monastery where Chopin spent a winter.
Valldemossa is a hillside village of honey-coloured stone houses in the Serra de Tramuntana, about 20 minutes northwest of Palma and the highest town on the island. Its cobbled lanes climb towards a former Carthusian monastery, where the composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838. It is one of Mallorca's prettiest mountain villages.

What Valldemossa is known for
Valldemossa is best known for the Royal Carthusian Monastery, a former royal palace turned charterhouse in the centre of the village. In the winter of 1838 to 1839, Chopin and George Sand rented a cell here, and he composed some of his most famous works during the stay; the cell, his piano and a small museum can still be visited. The village is also the birthplace of Santa Catalina Thomàs, the most venerated saint on the island. Around the monastery, cobbled lanes lined with flowers and stone houses lead past small cafes, galleries and the old parish church of Sant Bartomeu.
Things to do in Valldemossa
The main thing to do is tour the Royal Carthusian Monastery, including Chopin's cell, the cloisters and the gardens, and in summer you may catch a piano concert in the grounds. After that, the pleasure is simply wandering the steep, flowery lanes and stopping for a coffee. Keen walkers can pick up the Archduke's Path, a scenic mountain trail that runs from Valldemossa towards Deià with wide views of the coast.

Food and drink in Valldemossa
Valldemossa's own speciality is coca de patata, a light, sweet potato bun dusted with sugar, best eaten warm with a hot chocolate. The bakeries on and around Via Blanquerna have sold it for generations. Local olive oil is also worth seeking out.
