Sóller
Mountain, Rural
A pretty town in a mountain valley in northwest Mallorca, famous for its orange groves and the vintage train and tram that reach it.
Sóller sits in a green valley in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, in the northwest of Mallorca, about 3km inland from its port. The valley is full of orange and lemon groves, and the town is best known for the historic wooden train and tram that connect it to Palma and the coast. It is also a popular base for walking in the mountains.

What Sóller is known for
Sóller is best known for two vintage railways. The wooden train from Palma, opened in 1912, winds through the Tramuntana mountains and 13 tunnels to reach the town, and from there an old tram rattles down through the orange groves to Port de Sóller on the coast. The town grew rich on the orange and lemon trade in the 19th century, which paid for the elegant Art Nouveau buildings around its main square, the Plaça Constitució. The church of Sant Bartomeu, with its modernista facade, stands over the square, and the surrounding valley is known across the island for its oranges.
Things to do in Sóller
The classic day out is to ride the vintage train from Palma, then take the tram down to Port de Sóller and back. In the town itself, sit out on the Plaça Constitució with a fresh orange juice and look up at the modernista architecture. Sóller is also one of the best bases on the island for walking, with mountain trails leading off in every direction towards Fornalutx, Biniaraix and the high peaks.

Travel tips for visiting Sóller
Book the vintage train in advance in summer, and consider the combined train-and-tram ticket from Palma. Saturday is market day on and around the Plaça Constitució. Wear good shoes if you plan to walk, as the mountain trails are steep and stony. The town and the port are different places about 4km apart, linked by the tram, so allow time for both. Spring brings orange blossom and the May festival of Es Firó, a noisy re-enactment of a 1561 pirate battle.
