Massive news for UK tourism: Comcast NBCUniversal has officially received crucial planning permission for its massive new theme park and resort complex! This development confirms that the UK will host the first Universal-branded theme park in Europe.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) approved the request by granting a Special Development Order (SDO) on 16 December 2025. Although a statutory parliamentary review period must still be completed, this decision marks a major milestone for the project.
Why Bedford is the Ideal Location
The resort will be built just south of Bedford. From a logistical standpoint, the 476-acre site is perfect for travelers. The location is extremely well-connected, situated only 35 minutes north of London by train.
This excellent positioning ensures accessibility for millions of visitors. More than 80 per cent of England’s population, and half of the entire UK population, live within a two-hour travel window of the park. This connectivity guarantees the resort will be one of the highest-attended attractions on the continent.
To improve travel further, Universal’s investment will fund essential infrastructure upgrades. These include new direct slip roads from the A421 and the expansion of the Wixams railway station.
The Resort and Economic Impact
The proposed resort complex will feature a world-class theme park with several themed lands. Visitors can expect immersive and thrilling rides, innovative attractions, and exciting entertainment. The site will also include a 500-room hotel and an extensive retail and dining complex.
Beyond the thrills, the project is a powerful economic engine for the UK. It is projected to generate £50 billion in direct and indirect economic benefit. Universal will be one of the region’s largest employers. The park will create 8,000 permanent operational positions. Crucially, approximately 80% of these jobs are projected to go to local workers.
With construction set to begin in 2026, the future of UK entertainment and tourism is bright. Now that the development path is cleared, this is the perfect time to start planning your future holiday to the UK’s newest major destination.
