Tejeda

Gran Canaria's most beautiful mountain village, perched at over 1,000 metres above sea level with sweeping views of volcanic craters, rocky peaks and almond orchards.

Tejeda sits at the heart of Gran Canaria, high in the island's central mountains at around 1,050 metres above sea level. It is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and is surrounded by the dramatic volcanic landscape of the island's interior. The views from the village over the Caldera de Tejeda and towards the towering rocks of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga are extraordinary.

What [Destination] is known for

Tejeda is best known for its scenery, its almonds and its position as the gateway to the island's most iconic landscapes. The village itself is small, with traditional Canarian houses of white walls and wooden balconies lining narrow streets. From the main square and the promenade, the views over the caldera and the rocky peaks are wide and dramatic. Almonds are the lifeblood of Tejeda. The hillsides are covered with almond trees that burst into pink and white blossom in late January and February, one of Gran Canaria's most spectacular natural events. The village makes its famous marzipan and bienmesabe from those almonds, and the pastry shop Dulcería Nublo is a well-known stop for visitors. Just outside the village, the Cruz de Tejeda is the geographical centre of the island, a stone cross on a mountain pass at 1,580 metres with stalls selling local produce and wide views in every direction. From here, hiking trails lead to Roque Nublo, the island's most famous landmark, and to Roque Bentayga, an ancient sacred rock of the Guanche people. Both are within the Nublo Rural Park and the wider area is part of the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Come in late January or early February for the almond blossom, when the valley is at its most beautiful. The Cruz de Tejeda is the most popular viewpoint and can be crowded at weekends, so come early. Wear good walking shoes if you plan to hike to Roque Nublo, which takes about 90 minutes there and back. The mountain roads are winding and narrow in places, so take your time and enjoy the views. On a clear day, you can see the peak of Teide in Tenerife from the village and the surrounding hillsides.
