Meloneras

Gran Canaria's most upmarket resort, between the Maspalomas lighthouse and the dunes, with a two-kilometre seafront promenade, five-star hotels and designer shopping.

Meloneras sits on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, just west of the Maspalomas lighthouse. It is the island's most refined resort, built around a long palm-lined promenade of luxury hotels, seafront restaurants and designer boutiques. The beach is calm and quieter than its neighbours. It is the place to come for something genuinely upmarket on the south coast.

What Meloneras is known for

Meloneras is best known for its promenade and its five-star hotels. The Boulevard El Faro runs for two kilometres from the Maspalomas lighthouse along the shore to Meloneras beach, lined with outdoor restaurants, cocktail bars and boutiques carrying brands like Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren. The beach itself, Playa de Meloneras, is a stretch of golden sand with calm, clear water, quieter than the main Maspalomas beach next door. The resort's hotels are among the best on the island, with two award-winning thalassotherapy spas at the Lopesan resorts, which use heated seawater for treatments. Meloneras Golf, an 18-hole course with sea views, sits just west of the resort. The Gran Casino Costa Meloneras is another evening draw. At the eastern end of the promenade, close to the lighthouse, the La Charca lagoon sits within the Maspalomas Dunes nature reserve, a calm stretch of water popular with birdwatchers. From the promenade, the coastal path connects east to Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés, making it an easy base for the whole south coast.

Experiences and things to do in Meloneras

Walk the Boulevard El Faro in the early evening, when the restaurants and bars are setting up and the light over the sea is at its best. Stop at the lighthouse end for the view across the dunes and the Atlantic. Book a thalassotherapy session at one of the Lopesan spas for a half day of sea-water treatments and relaxation. Spend time on the quiet Meloneras beach, which is calmer and less busy than Maspalomas next door. Walk or cycle east to Maspalomas to see the dunes. The casino is a lively option for the evening.

Food and drink in Meloneras

The promenade is the island's best stretch for upmarket dining, with seafood restaurants and international kitchens looking out over the sea. Prices are higher than in Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés, but the quality and setting reflect that. Canarian fish dishes and fresh tuna are the things to look for.
