Playa del Inglés

Gran Canaria's most famous and lively resort, with three kilometres of golden beach, the iconic Yumbo Centrum and some of the liveliest nightlife in the Canary Islands.

Playa del Inglés sits on the south coast of Gran Canaria, next to the Maspalomas Dunes. It was one of the first resorts built on the island, in the early 1960s, and it has grown into one of the busiest and best-known holiday spots in Europe. A long golden beach runs along the front, with the dunes at one end and the resort of San Agustín at the other. By night, the mood shifts to something louder and livelier.

What Playa del Inglés is known for

Playa del Inglés is best known for its beach and its nightlife. The beach stretches for around three kilometres of fine golden sand, backed by a busy promenade with restaurants, bars and shops. The water is calm and clear, and the beach has Blue Flag status. At the eastern end, the sand merges into the protected dunes of Maspalomas. The resort is popular with families by day, but its real reputation comes after dark. At the centre of the nightlife is the Yumbo Centrum, a large open-air shopping centre that is ordinary by day and extraordinary by night. After 10pm, over thirty bars and clubs open across its several floors, drawing a crowd that is largely, though not exclusively, LGBTQ+. There are drag shows, themed nights, dance floors and cocktail bars at every turn. Nearby, the Kasbah and Metro shopping centres add more mainstream bars and clubs to the mix. The resort has been a major hub for LGBTQ+ tourism since the late 1970s, when the first gay bar opened in the Yumbo. Today it hosts the huge Maspalomas Pride each May, which fills the resort and the dunes with events and parades for ten days. Families and couples of all kinds also come for the beach, the water sports and the warm weather, which rarely dips below 18°C even in winter.

Experiences and things to do in Playa del Inglés

Spend time on the long beach, which has watersports equipment to rent, calm shallow water for swimming and plenty of space even at its busiest. Walk the Paseo Costa Canaria promenade from San Agustín to the Maspalomas lighthouse, which takes about an hour each way and passes some of the best views on the south coast. In the evening, explore the Yumbo Centrum, where each night has its own character. Try sandboarding on the dunes or take a boat trip from the nearby marina at Puerto Rico.

Food and drink in Playa del Inglés

The resort has restaurants for every budget and mood, from cheap and cheerful international options near the beach to smarter places on the promenade. For something local, look for Canarian dishes like papas arrugadas with mojo and fresh fish. The Yumbo has plenty of casual dining before the nightlife begins.

Getting to Playa del Inglés and around

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is on the east coast, about 45 minutes from Playa del Inglés by car or bus. Regular buses connect the resort to Maspalomas, Puerto Rico and Las Palmas. The resort is large, so taxis and the local bus service are useful for getting between the beach, the shopping centres and the hotels.

Travel tips for visiting Playa del Inglés

The beach is long enough that you can always find a quieter stretch, especially toward the San Agustín end. The Yumbo is at its busiest from midnight to 4am, and the atmosphere changes every night. For Pride in May, book well ahead as the resort fills up completely. A bus pass is worth buying if you plan to explore the rest of the south coast during the day. The Paseo Marítimo coastal walk is one of the best in the Canaries and can be done in either direction.
