Teguise
Villa de Teguise
Lanzarote's former inland capital, with 15th-century streets, a volcanic hilltop castle and the island's largest Sunday market.
Teguise, known as La Villa, sits in the centre of Lanzarote about 10km from the coast. It was the island's capital until 1852, and the old quarter survives well — cobbled streets, noble houses and civic buildings from the colonial period. On most days it is quiet. On Sundays it fills for the island's most famous market.

What [Destination] is known for
Teguise is best known for its historic architecture and its Sunday market. The old town centres on Plaza de la Constitución, flanked by the 15th-century church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and the Palacio Spínola, now a museum of island life. Above the town, the Castillo de Santa Bárbara sits on the Montaña Guanapay volcano crater. Built in the 16th century against pirate raids, it houses the Museum of Piracy. The walk up takes about 20 minutes and the views to La Graciosa are exceptional. Every Sunday from 9am to 2pm, around 400 stalls fill the plazas with ceramics, cheeses, wines and crafts. Music and folk dancing take place in the main square throughout the morning.

Things to do in [Destination]
If you enjoy history, Teguise is best on a weekday morning when the colonial streets are quiet. Walk from Plaza de la Constitución to the Palacio Spínola, then climb to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara for the views. If the market is your reason for visiting, come on a Sunday before 10am, when the stalls are fully set up but the coach tours have not yet arrived.

Food and drink in [Destination]
The town has a small number of traditional Canarian restaurants around the main square, best on weekday lunchtimes. Canarian cheese, gofio and papas arrugadas with mojo are the things to try. On Sundays, market food stalls add more casual options.

Best time to visit [Destination]
Getting to [Destination] and around
About 25 minutes by car from Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise, and 20 minutes from Arrecife. Buses connect to Arrecife and Costa Teguise, though infrequently, so a hire car is the most practical option. On Sundays, additional car parks open on the edge of town for market visitors.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]
Come before 10am on Sundays to see the market before the coach tours arrive — the first hour is noticeably calmer. Weekdays are better for photography and for appreciating the architecture without crowds. The climb to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara takes about 20 minutes and the crater views are worth it. Combine Teguise with Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río for a full day in the north of the island. The Palacio Spínola museum gives a good sense of the island's colonial history.
