Puerto del Carmen sits on the southeast coast of Lanzarote, about 15 minutes from the airport. Once a fishing village, it has grown into the island's most visited resort. A six-kilometre stretch of beach runs along the front, backed by the Avenida de las Playas. The old harbour at La Tiñosa still gives one end of the town a quieter, more local feel.

Puerto del Carmen is best known for its beach and its old harbour. Four connected stretches of sand — Matagorda, Playa Grande, Los Pocillos and Playa Chica — run almost without interruption for six kilometres. Playa Chica, at the western end, is the calmest and best for snorkelling. The old harbour at La Tiñosa is where the fishing village used to be. The buildings are low, the pace is slow and the seafood restaurants here are the best in the resort. The Avenida de las Playas is the resort's main promenade, lined with bars, restaurants and shops. Nightlife concentrates here and in the Varadero area, from cocktail terraces to late-night clubs.

If you enjoy snorkelling or diving, Playa Chica at the western end has the clearest water and the most interesting underwater scenery, with several dive schools operating from the beach. If you enjoy nightlife, the old harbour end of the Avenida is more relaxed, with cocktail bars and live music, while the Varadero area gets louder as the night goes on. For day trips, Timanfaya National Park is about 30 minutes west.

About 15 minutes from Lanzarote Airport (ACE) by car or taxi — the quickest airport transfer of any resort on the island. Regular buses connect to Arrecife, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise. The promenade is flat and easy to walk along its full length.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]
The old harbour at La Tiñosa is worth the 20-minute walk from the main strip for the seafood and the quieter atmosphere. Playa Chica is the calmest beach and the best for snorkelling — go early before the boats arrive. Timanfaya National Park is about 30 minutes west and best in the morning. The Avenida de las Playas does not come alive until after 11pm. A hire car opens up the whole island from this base.
