Playa Blanca sits at the southern tip of Lanzarote and has kept a quieter character than the island's larger resorts. It grew from a fishing village into a low-rise resort of hotels and villas, with no large nightclubs. The promenade, the Marina Rubicón and the Papagayo coves make it the natural choice for couples and families.

Playa Blanca is best known for its promenade, its marina and the Papagayo beaches. A seafront promenade runs nine kilometres from the Pechiguera lighthouse to Marina Rubicón, passing three calm, sheltered beaches. Marina Rubicón is one of the most attractive marina developments in the Canaries, designed to resemble a traditional Canarian village with narrow alleyways and volcanic stone archways. It has restaurants, boutique shops and a twice-weekly market. Just offshore, the Museo Atlántico is Europe's first underwater sculpture museum, with works by Jason deCaires Taylor at 14 metres depth. The Papagayo beaches, 3km east within the Los Ajaches Natural Park, are sheltered golden coves with clear turquoise water, widely considered the best beaches on the island.

Arrive at Papagayo before 10am for the quietest coves — the beaches fill quickly by midday. The Museo Atlántico dives run year-round but places are limited, so book ahead. The Marina Rubicón market on Wednesdays and Saturdays has good local crafts and produce. The walk west toward Pechiguera lighthouse is quieter than the marina end and good at sunset. The Fuerteventura ferry gives an easy day trip to Corralejo in about 25 minutes.
