Sant Miquel de Balansat

A quiet hilltop village in northern Ibiza, crowned by a white fortress church with traditional folk dancing in summer.

Sant Miquel de Balansat, or San Miguel, is a peaceful village in the north of Ibiza, about 18km from Ibiza Town. White houses spread below a hill topped by a striking fortress church. It is a calm, traditional place of farmers, artisans and small shops. In summer, the church becomes a stage for Ibiza's folk dancing.

What [Destination] is known for

Sant Miquel is best known for its fortress church, which sits on a hill called Puig de Missa above the village. Built from the 14th century onwards, it was made to defend the area from pirate raids, and it looks more like a small castle than a church. Inside are old frescoes and a porch with stone benches. From the top there are wide views over the countryside and the coast. On Thursday evenings in summer, the church patio hosts ball pagès, Ibiza's traditional folk dancing, alongside a small craft market.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

The fortress church is the main sight, and the climb up rewards you with wide views. For folk dancing, come on a Thursday evening in summer, when ball pagès is held on the church patio. The Can Marçà caves near Port de Sant Miquel make a good extra stop. A car helps here, as bus services to the north are limited. The village is calm and traditional, so come for peace rather than nightlife.
