The capital of Ibiza, known to visitors as Ibiza Town, with a UNESCO-listed walled old town, a lively port and some of the island's best nightlife.

Ibiza Town, is the island's capital, on the southeast coast. Above the harbour rises Dalt Vila, the fortified old town that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, a maze of cobbled lanes climbing to a cathedral and a castle. Below it spread the port, the marinas and the old fishing quarter of La Marina, full of bars, shops and restaurants. It is the cultural heart of Ibiza and one of its nightlife centres too.

What [Destination] is known for

Ibiza Town is best known for Dalt Vila, the walled old town that crowns the hill above the harbour. Its huge Renaissance walls, entered through the grand Portal de ses Taules gateway, have protected the town since the 16th century, and the cobbled lanes inside climb past museums and small squares to a Gothic cathedral and an old castle at the summit, with wide views over the sea to Formentera. The whole old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Below the walls, the port and the old fishing quarter of La Marina are where the city comes alive at night, with narrow streets of bars, boutiques and restaurants and the famous nightclub Pacha by the marina. Smart yachts fill the Marina Ibiza and Marina Botafoch across the water. Ibiza is also one of the oldest cities in Europe, founded by the Phoenicians around 654 BC. That history is on show at the Puig des Molins, a vast ancient burial ground, also part of the UNESCO listing, with its own museum near the centre.

Things to do in [Destination]

Spend your first hours climbing through Dalt Vila, entering at the Portal de ses Taules and winding up to the cathedral and the ramparts for the view. On the way, stop at one of the museums, such as the contemporary art museum near the gate. Down in La Marina and the port, browse the boutiques by day and join the busy bar scene after dark. If you want a beach, Talamanca and Figueretes are both a short walk or drive from the centre. From the port, boats cross to Formentera for an easy day trip to its famous beaches.

Where to stay in [Destination] (City)

Dalt Vila and the old town have the most characterful hotels, steps from the UNESCO-listed walls and the port. The marina area suits those who want nightlife and restaurants on the doorstep. For a quieter stay, Talamanca beach is a short walk east.

Food and drink in [Destination]

Ibiza Town has the island's broadest food scene, from old-town tapas terraces to smart marina restaurants. Look for Ibizan specialities such as bullit de peix, a fisherman's stew of fish and potatoes served in two courses, and flaó, a baked cheese and mint tart. Round off a meal with hierbas ibicencas, the local herb liqueur.

Best time to visit [Destination]

June and September balance good weather with manageable crowds. July and August are the peak party months, with the highest prices and biggest queues. Outside May to October, much of the nightlife closes.

Getting to [Destination] and around

Ibiza Airport (IBZ) is about 7km southwest of the city, around 15 minutes by taxi or bus. Ibiza is also the island's main port: ferries run to the mainland at Barcelona, Valencia and Dénia, to Palma on Mallorca, and very frequently across to the neighbouring island of Formentera, around 30 minutes away. The city centre, the old town and the port are all walkable, though Dalt Vila is steep, so wear comfortable shoes.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Wear comfortable shoes for Dalt Vila, as the old town is steep and cobbled. Entry to the old town and the walls is free, and it is quietest in the morning or early evening. The port and La Marina come alive late, so this is where to be after dinner. Talamanca is the nearest calm, family-friendly beach to the centre. Boats to Formentera leave regularly from the port for a simple day trip. Many bars and clubs run from May to October, with far less open in winter. Look out for the Medieval Festival in May, when Dalt Vila fills with stalls and re-enactments.
