Sant Carles de Peralta

A small traditional village in northeast Ibiza, the island's original hippy village and home of the famous Las Dalias market.

Sant Carles de Peralta, also called San Carlos, is a small village in the northeast of Ibiza. It is one of the island's oldest villages, with white houses around an 18th-century church. In the 1960s it became the heart of Ibiza's hippy scene, and it still has a bohemian feel. Just outside it lies Las Dalias, the island's most famous hippy market.

What [Destination] is known for

Sant Carles is best known as the original hippy village of Ibiza. Artists and free spirits settled here in the 1960s, and the bohemian spirit remains. The white church sits at the centre, and beside it stands Bar Anita, an old meeting point where villagers still collect their post from wooden boxes on the wall. Just outside the village is Las Dalias, a long-running hippy market packed with crafts, clothes, art and live music. The quiet countryside around the village, full of almond and carob trees, is good for slow drives and walks.

Things to do in [Destination]

The big draw is Las Dalias, the hippy market just outside the village, held on Saturdays and some summer evenings. In the village itself, stop at Bar Anita for a drink and its homemade herb liqueur, and look at the white church across the square. You can also visit a small farmhouse museum to see how rural Ibiza once lived. The peaceful lanes around the village are lovely for a quiet drive.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Las Dalias market runs on Saturdays all year, with night markets on some summer evenings. Arrive early on busy August Saturdays, when the market can get very crowded. Bar Anita is the heart of the village, good for a drink and a taste of hierbas. The roads here meet at a junction, so it is an easy stop while touring the northeast. A car helps, as buses are limited outside market days.
