Sant Ferran de ses Roques

A small, bohemian village in the middle of Formentera, the old heart of the island's hippy scene and still its most creative corner.

Sant Ferran de ses Roques, often called San Fernando, sits in the centre of Formentera, between the capital and the resort of Es Pujols. In the 1960s it became the heart of the island's hippy scene, and it has kept that easy, creative spirit ever since. By day it feels quiet, but on summer evenings the square and streets come alive.

What [Destination] is known for

Sant Ferran is best known for its bohemian past and the lively nights that still go with it. The old meeting point is Fonda Pepe, a bar and small hotel by the church that drew artists and free spirits from the 1960s, and its walls are still covered with photos from those years. The village church, the smallest of the three on Formentera, stands on the main square where live music often plays on summer nights. Along the street leading up to it, an evening craft market sells the work of local painters and makers. The mood here is gentle and local, quite different from the clubs of Es Pujols.

Things to do in [Destination]

The best way to enjoy Sant Ferran is to come in the evening, when the village wakes up. Start with a drink at the legendary Fonda Pepe, then wander the craft market and listen to whatever music is playing in the square. There are some lovely places to eat here too, from old island kitchens to a famous pizzeria. It is a good central base, with the beaches and Es Pujols a short ride away.

Sant Ferran has a relaxed and varied food scene for such a small place. You can eat traditional Formentera dishes like squid cooked in its own ink at Can Forn, or sit out under the trees for some of the island's best pizza.
