El Pilar de la Mola

Formentera's highest, most remote village, on the La Mola plateau, known for its craft market, old windmill and clifftop lighthouse.

El Pilar de la Mola, usually just called La Mola, is the highest and most remote village on Formentera. It sits on a plateau at the island's eastern end, reached by a winding road up through pine woods. It is a small, traditional place of houses around an 18th-century church. People come for its craft market, its windmill and its lighthouse.

What El Pilar de la Mola is known for

La Mola is best known for its craft market and its lighthouse. The market fills the village on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons in summer, with handmade crafts and live music. It was the first market on the island, started by hippies in the late 1960s. Just outside the village stands the Molí Vell, a well-kept windmill from 1778. At the end of the road sits the Far de la Mola, a lighthouse on a high cliff, with a monument to the writer Jules Verne, who once wrote about it. The clifftop views are huge.
