Fornells

A white fishing village on a long, sheltered bay in northern Menorca, famous for its lobster stew and its calm waters for sailing.

Fornells is a small white fishing village on the north coast of Menorca, set at the mouth of a long, sheltered bay. The calm water and the line of low white houses give it a peaceful, traditional feel. It is famous across the island for one dish in particular, lobster stew, and for the sailing and water sports on its bay.

What [Destination] is known for

Fornells is best known for its food, and above all for caldereta de langosta, a rich lobster stew that was once fishermen's food and is now the island's signature dish. People drive from all over Menorca to eat it at the village's harbour restaurants. The other half of Fornells is its bay, almost three kilometres long and well sheltered from the north wind, which makes it one of the best places on the island to sail, windsurf or kayak. Above the village stands the Torre de Fornells, a tall British-built defence tower with wide views over the coast.

Things to do in [Destination]

The classic thing to do in Fornells is to eat lobster stew at a restaurant by the harbour, looking out over the boats. Beyond that, the bay is the star: you can sail, windsurf, kayak or paddleboard on its calm water, or take a boat trip along the wild north coast. Walk out to the Torre de Fornells for the views, and stroll the white streets and the palm-lined promenade. Sunset over the bay is especially lovely.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Fornells is famous for lobster stew, which is a pricey treat, so book ahead in summer. The sheltered bay is one of the best places in Menorca to learn to sail or windsurf. Climb the Torre de Fornells for some of the finest views on the north coast. The village is calm and low-key, better for good food and the sea than for nightlife. The nearby Cap de Cavalleria lighthouse is a wonderful spot for sunset.
