Es Castell

A small British-built garrison town on the edge of Maó harbour, with a grand parade-ground square and the lively Cales Fonts waterfront.

Es Castell sits on Maó harbour, just east of the capital, and is the town that best keeps Menorca's British past. The British laid it out in 1771 as a garrison town, around a large square that was once a parade ground, lined with red-and-white barracks. Today its main draw is Cales Fonts, a pretty little harbour full of bars and restaurants.

What [Destination] is known for

Es Castell is best known for its British military history and its harbour life. The town was built to a neat grid by the British, and the huge central square, the old parade ground, is still ringed by colonial buildings painted red and white. The red town hall holds the Military Museum of Menorca, and the British-built Fort Marlborough, with its rock-cut tunnels, sits just along the coast. The other side of Es Castell is Cales Fonts, a small harbour where old fishermen's cellars have become bars and restaurants. On summer evenings it fills with diners, an open-air craft market and a warm golden light.

Things to do in [Destination]

Spend an evening at Cales Fonts, the heart of the town, with dinner by the water and a wander round the craft market. By day, learn about Menorca's past at the Military Museum on the main square, and drive along the coast to explore Fort Marlborough and the ruins of Sant Felip castle. Take in the view over the harbour mouth from the little Cala Corb cove, and hop on a boat trip out to the islands in Maó harbour.

Food and drink in [Destination]

Eating in Es Castell means Cales Fonts, where restaurants and bars line the old harbour. You can try fresh fish, seafood and Menorca's famous lobster stew at a table right by the water, then stay on for a drink as the evening lights come on.

Getting to [Destination] and around

Es Castell is only about 3km east of Maó, an easy drive, taxi or bus ride from the capital. The island's airport (MAH) is around 15 minutes away. There is no beach in the town itself, so a car helps if you want to reach the coves and beaches nearby, though Cales Fonts and the centre are easy to enjoy on foot.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Cales Fonts is at its best in the evening, so come for dinner and stay for the atmosphere. The Military Museum and nearby Fort Marlborough are a treat for anyone interested in history. Es Castell makes a quieter base than Maó, while still being very close to the capital. There is no real beach in town, but small coves and bigger beaches are a short drive away. Es Castell is the easternmost town in Spain, so it is a fine place to catch an early sunrise.
