Santanyí

A golden-stone market town in southeast Mallorca, known for its twice-weekly market, its art galleries and its Baroque church organ.

Santanyí is a historic market town built from golden sandstone in the southeast of Mallorca, a short drive inland from the coast. Its warm-coloured old streets are full of art galleries, boutiques and cafes, and it is busiest on market days. As the main town of its area, it makes a calm base away from the nearby beach resorts.

What [Destination] is known for

Santanyí is best known for its golden sandstone, quarried nearby for centuries and used in some of Mallorca's grandest buildings, including parts of Palma's cathedral. The same warm stone gives the old town its glow. The town is also famous for its market, held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, one of the largest on the island, which fills the streets around the main square. Santanyí has long drawn artists for its light, and galleries and studios are dotted through the centre. The parish church of Sant Andreu holds a celebrated 18th-century Baroque organ, and the old gateway of the Porta Murada survives from the town's walled past.

Things to do in [Destination]

The best day to come is a Wednesday or Saturday, when the market takes over the centre. Any day, you can wander the sandstone lanes, browse the art galleries and small boutiques, and stop for a coffee on the main square. Step through the Porta Murada gateway into the old town, and look inside the church of Sant Andreu to see its famous organ. The town is a good base for exploring the southeast coast and the Mondragó Natural Park.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Come on a Wednesday or Saturday morning for the market, and arrive early to beat the crowds and the heat. Park on the edge of town, as the central streets are narrow and often closed for the market. The galleries and boutiques are a highlight, so leave time to browse. Ask about organ concerts at the church of Sant Andreu, held through the year. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit.
