Pollença

A historic market town at the foot of Mallorca's Tramuntana mountains, known for its Sunday market and the 365 Calvari steps.

Pollença is an old market town in the north of Mallorca, set in a valley below the Tramuntana mountains. Small enough to explore in a morning, it has cobbled streets, a lively main square and a famous stairway up to a hilltop chapel. It is often confused with Port de Pollença, a separate coastal town about 6km away; the historic town is the inland one.

What [Destination] is known for

Pollença is best known for the Calvari, a straight flight of 365 stone steps lined with cypress trees that climbs from the old town to a small chapel, with wide views over the town and valley at the top. Each Good Friday, a candlelit procession carries a figure of Christ down the steps. The town is also known for its Sunday market, one of the busiest on the island, which spreads around the main square, the Placa Major. Overlooking the square is the Baroque church of Mare de Deu dels Angels, and a short climb away sits the hilltop monastery of Puig de Maria.

Things to do in [Destination]

Start by climbing the 365 Calvari steps for the view, then come back down to the Placa Major for a coffee and some people-watching. If you like a longer walk, follow the path up to the Puig de Maria monastery, which has even wider views over the bay and mountains. Time your visit for Sunday if you can, when the market is in full swing.

Travel tips for visiting [Destination]

Wear comfortable shoes for the 365 Calvari steps, and take some water on a hot day. Come on a Sunday morning for the market, but arrive before 9am to find parking easily. You can drive most of the way up to the Puig de Maria monastery, then walk the final stretch. The town is busiest at midday, so early morning or early evening is the nicest time on the main square.
