What Torrevieja is known for
Torrevieja is best known for its salt lakes and its beaches. The Laguna Rosa is one of very few pink lakes in Europe, its colour created by algae and salt-loving bacteria, and is a striking sight, especially in summer. The lakes form part of a protected natural park that draws flamingos and other birds. Swimming is banned, but the views and birdlife make them worth a visit. The town itself has a long seafront promenade linking sandy beaches such as Playa del Cura with the coves around the centre. Torrevieja's salt history is told in its seafront museums, and the town is known for habanera music, brought back by sailors from the salt trade with Cuba.

If you enjoy unusual landscapes, visit the Laguna Rosa, the pink salt lake on the edge of town, in the late afternoon when the colour is strongest and the light is good for photos. If you like wildlife, the same natural park is one of the best places on the coast to see flamingos, especially in spring. For a relaxed day, walk the seafront promenade between the beaches and the marina, stopping at one of the chiringuitos by the water.

Spring and autumn bring warm, pleasant weather and fewer crowds, ideal for the beaches and the salt-lake walks. The pink lake is at its most vivid in the summer heat, though July and August are busy. Winters are mild, which is why many visitors stay year-round.

Torrevieja is about 45km south of Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC), roughly 35 to 40 minutes by car or taxi. Murcia's airport is a similar distance to the south. There is no train, so buses and cars are the main options. The town and seafront are flat and easy to explore on foot or by bike.
