Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca
Lanzarote's most southerly resort, with upmarket hotels, a stylish marina and the famous Papagayo beaches close by.
Playa Blanca sits at the southern tip of Lanzarote and has kept a quieter character than the island's larger resorts. It grew from a fishing village into a low-rise resort of hotels and villas, with no large nightclubs. The promenade, the Marina Rubicón and the Papagayo coves make it the natural choice for couples and families.

What Playa Blanca is known for
Playa Blanca is best known for its promenade, its marina and the Papagayo beaches. A seafront promenade runs nine kilometres from the Pechiguera lighthouse to Marina Rubicón, passing three calm, sheltered beaches. Marina Rubicón is one of the most attractive marina developments in the Canaries, designed to resemble a traditional Canarian village with narrow alleyways and volcanic stone archways. It has restaurants, boutique shops and a twice-weekly market. Just offshore, the Museo Atlántico is Europe's first underwater sculpture museum, with works by Jason deCaires Taylor at 14 metres depth. The Papagayo beaches, 3km east within the Los Ajaches Natural Park, are sheltered golden coves with clear turquoise water, widely considered the best beaches on the island.

Experiences and things to do in Playa Blanca
If you enjoy long coastal walks, the promenade from the Pechiguera lighthouse to Marina Rubicón is one of the best in the Canaries, especially at sunrise or sunset. If you enjoy diving, the Museo Atlántico offers something genuinely unusual — guided dives through a submerged sculpture garden for all levels. For the best beaches on the island, spend a morning at Papagayo and arrive early before the coves fill up.

Food and drink in Playa Blanca
The marina restaurants serve fresh fish and international cooking with good views. For Canarian food, the smaller restaurants near the seafront promenade serve papas arrugadas, fresh fish and local goat's cheese at honest prices.

Best time to visit Playa Blanca
Sheltered by the hills behind it, this resort is the calmest and driest part of the island, warm most of the year. Summer and the winter holiday season bring the largest crowds. Spring and autumn keep the same sunshine with noticeably more space on the beaches.
Getting to Playa Blanca and around
About 30 minutes from Lanzarote Airport (ACE) by car or taxi, or around 45 minutes by bus with a change in Arrecife. Buses also connect to Puerto del Carmen. A ferry from the harbour in Playa Blanca reaches Corralejo in Fuerteventura in about 25 minutes.

Travel tips for visiting Playa Blanca
Arrive at Papagayo before 10am for the quietest coves — the beaches fill quickly by midday. The Museo Atlántico dives run year-round but places are limited, so book ahead. The Marina Rubicón market on Wednesdays and Saturdays has good local crafts and produce. The walk west toward Pechiguera lighthouse is quieter than the marina end and good at sunset. The Fuerteventura ferry gives an easy day trip to Corralejo in about 25 minutes.
